How to Write a Blog Post for Your Business (Without Overthinking It)

I talk to small business owners all the time who know blogging would be helpful, but still haven’t started. And it’s not because they’re lazy or unmotivated—it’s usually because they don’t know what to say or how to say it.

Blogging feels hard because we think we have to sound like a magazine editor or write something that’ll go viral. But here’s the truth: your blog isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being helpful.

A blog post is simply you, sharing your knowledge and experience in a way that builds trust and answers questions. You’re not trying to impress, you’re just trying to connect.

Let’s walk through the steps, so you can finally write a blog post that feels good, sounds like you, and actually helps your business.

Step 1: Choose a Topic You Already Talk About

The best blog post topics come from the questions your customers ask. Every time someone emails you asking, “What should I pack for this?” or “When’s the best time to come?”, that’s a blog post waiting to happen.

If you’re stuck, try one of these ideas:

  • Top 5 hidden spots in your local area
  • A seasonal packing list
  • The story behind your business or one of your favourite local partnerships
  • How to plan the perfect weekend itinerary in your region
  • What to expect on your tour, stay or experience

Your blog doesn’t have to be groundbreaking. It just needs to be helpful and honest.

Step 2: Write a Clear, Specific Title

The title is what gets people to click—and it also helps with Google rankings. The best titles are clear, not clever. They should tell the reader exactly what they’re about to learn.

Instead of “A Day to Remember,” try “How to Spend One Perfect Day in Stanley, Tasmania.”

It’s specific, it sets the scene, and it contains the kind of search-friendly words people might be Googling.

Step 3: Break It Into Sections

People rarely read websites word for word. They skim, scan, and jump to the parts that matter most to them.

That’s why structure is so important.

Start with a short intro that sets the scene. Then break your post into sections using headings (H2s in your website builder). Keep paragraphs short and to the point.

Dot points are great for checklists, tips or steps. They make your blog feel lighter and easier to digest.

Step 4: Write Like You Speak

This is the part where people tend to freeze. “I don’t know how to sound on my blog.”

Here’s my advice: sound like yourself.

Write the way you’d explain something to a customer face to face. Friendly, clear, and without overthinking it. Don’t worry about being formal. Contractions, little asides, and natural language are all welcome here.

You’re not writing an essay. You’re just having a conversation.

Step 5: Add a Next Step

Don’t just leave people hanging at the end. Once they’ve read your post, what should they do next?

That might be:

  • Booking a stay or tour
  • Joining your email list
  • Reading another blog post
  • Following you on Instagram
  • Getting in touch with a question

Make it easy for them to keep moving. Even a simple “Have a question? I’d love to hear from you” goes a long way.

Step 6: Hit Publish (Even If It’s Not Perfect)

This is the part most people avoid. They tweak and rewrite and wonder if it’s good enough.

Let me tell you—done is better than perfect.

You can always update your blog post later. You can always write another one next month. But getting your first blog out there is the biggest win.
